Expectations are high on the new Sony mins things in Z5 family, and the successor to the still popular Z3 Compact. The latter has been for a long period topped the popularity lists among operators and resellers and is currently in third place sony_xperia_z5_compact_1 sony_xperia_z5_compact_2 sony_xperia_z5_compact_3 sony_xperia_z5_compact_4 sony_xperia_z5_compact_37 sony_xperia_z5_compact_28

box is compact and made of recyclable materials and contain relatively little plastic which we always appreciate. We lift the lid we find in addition to the Xperia Z5 Compact AC adapter (5V == 1.5A), a little over meter-long USB cable and a quick start guide.

in the Box is thus as follows:

* Xperia Z5 Compact 2 (White)

* charger adapters (black, 5V == 1.5A)

* USB cable (black, about 1 meter)

* Documentation / Quick Start Guide

Xperia Z5 Compact has a slightly rounded frame made from plastic that is smooth and has a matte finish. Front and back are made of glass and according to Sony, the glass from a “well-known manufacturer”. One guess is that in fact it is about “Gorilla Glass”, but that Sony has not paid for the use of the trademark. The glass on both sides is slightly recessed so that it does not touch the ground on flat surfaces, something that is good to avoid scratches. There is no plastic cover or lamination on top of the display glass as we have seen from some previous Sony phones.

Unlike previous Z-series, Sony this time frosted glass on the rear panel, which also has a slightly different texture than the transparent glasses Sony previously used. One advantage of the frosted glass versus the transparent is that fingerprints are not visible clearly. It also means that the phone receives a right peculiar appearance which we have not seen this type of glass used in the past.

The fit is good and the phone fits in the hand which partly depends on the thickness and the fact that the frame is slightly curved and relatively smooth . In comparison with the Z3 Compact Z5 a gap smaller, recessed on / off button, and fewer bars / smoother chassis which together also helps that it is better in the hand.

Build quality is consistently good and frame made of plastic does not affect the quality of the impression, even if a metal frame meant that the phone felt to be lavish. Torsional rigidity is very good due to the phone’s thickness in combination with the phone is relatively compact and has a built in battery / no removable cover.

Sony has placed its logo on top of the glass at the back, while the front sits under the display glass. All other text on the back cover is positioned underneath the glass. One drawback to the logo on the top surface of the glass is that it can wear off with time.

On / off button, which also acts as a fingerprint reader as well as the volume (+/-) buttons and camera button sits all the unit’s right side. The on / off button is sunken into the chassis, while the other keys stand out. The feeling is good in both key types and we perceive them not as spongy; especially the on / off button is unusually pleasant to the touch and if we would rate the different units on / off button and ports Z5: an extremely high.

On the front we find selfiekameran located on the left upper side and on the the opposite side is the proximity and light sensor. Beside proximity sensor is LED. The head end is 3.5mm jack, while the microUSB port is located at the bottom of the device.

SIM card slot, along with a microSD card reader located under a cover on the unit’s left long side. The hatch is tight on our specimens and has a hefty rubber seal on the inside which gives a much better impression than the corresponding gap on the Xperia Z3 Compact.

Z5 Compact mainly differs in two respects from its predecessor. First, the increased depth of 0,26mm and also has the weight increased from 129 grams to 138 grams. Otherwise, the phone is almost identical in terms of external dimensions. One explanation for the weight gain is partly in the increased battery capacity of 100 mAh.

Placing Z5 Compact next Z3 Compact, we see that the magnetic charging plug is removed and the microUSB port is no longer hidden behind a waterproof cover; it is instead in the foothills of the phone and is completely bare, without for that matter affect water density – the phone is still the IP68-rated.

Audio features and wireless standards

Xperia Z5 Compact provides a somewhat fuller sound than its predecessor, the voice and the noise level is fully approved / in comparison with the best competitors. We have not heard any complaints from our counterparty at the voice call.

In comparison with the Z3 Compact grille that covers the device’s stereo speakers, located positioned ii head end and foot end on the front of the phone, much broader. If it helps to explain the enhanced sound image left unsaid, but Z5 Compact performs a relatively full-bodied, clear and sufficiently loud stereo sound to far surpass its predecessor. We hear, nor any hint of crackling or distortion at maximum volume assignments.

Along with Sony’s headphones, we can enjoy a well-balanced and neutral sound that is exempt from background noise as far as our ears can decide. The volume is in line with what we experience to other top lurking performs – neither better nor worse.

we activate Sony’s audio enhanced features experienced none of the editors that the sound is for the better, but we experience it rather as an impairment. How good sound sounds, however, is a matter of taste and it is very possible that the functions will be estimated depending on the listener. However, we are grateful for the phone’s five band equalizer that lets us adjust the picture as we want it.

The features according to Sony can enhance the sound belongs:

“DSEE HX” (Improves quality of compressed music by restore high notes) “Clear Audio +” (Makes the sound clearer) “Automatic optimization” (Analyzes the headphones and ear for music playback. The audio experience is optimized then.) “Surround sound (Mimicking the sound in a studio, club or concert hall)” “NR” (Compatible only with noise reduction headphones) # gallery-16 margin: auto; # Gallery-16 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 20%; # Gallery-16 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; # Gallery-16 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; / * See gallery_shortcode () in wp-includes / media.php * / sony_xperia_z5_compact_audio_3 sony_xperia_z5_compact_audio_2 sony_xperia_z5_compact_audio_4 sony_xperia_z5_compact_audio_5 sony_xperia_z5_compact_audio_1

reception via the mobile network during the test phase has been excellent. We have not had either the major or minor signal problems than with our Huawei P8 or Xperia Z 3 + at either voice or data usage. Wi-Fi (802.11ac 5GHz), the clinic also been excellent and receiving the respective transfer rate maxes out our Internet connection at 100 / 50Mbit / s.

GPS and positioning

It was a long time since we tested a phone whose GPS is not working properly. Xperia Z5 Compact has a well-functioning GPS device from a cold start locking our position in only a few seconds without any help from the A-GPS (line of sight). In addition to the GPS also supports GLONASS as the picture above shows where the entire 29 available satellites in which the phone is locked against 19 of them.

Display and digitizer

The screen measures 4, 6 “and has a resolution of 720p (720 x 1280 px) giving a pixel density of 319 PPI. Sony uses, as usual, an IPS panel and in comparison with its predecessor, the brightness is improved – as shown in the table below.

Unit Maximum brightness (cd / m2) Motorola Moto X Style581 Sony Xperia Z5 Compact 580 Ulefone BeTouch 2526 Motorola Moto G (1st gen) 526 Google Nexus 6508 Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge + 479 Sony Xperia Z3 Compact470 HTC One M7447 Moto G 3 (2015) 415 OnePlus 2348 We measure a maximum brightness 580 cd / m2 which is very good and about 100 cd / m2 better than the Xperia Z3 Compact.

color reproduction, we believe that good and neither contrast or black disappoint us. For obvious reasons, blacks suffer when we pull up the brightness to 100%, especially at such a bright IPS panel, but at ~ 50% brightness looks considerably better. Skin tones including AMOLED panels may have problems presented simultaneously in a natural way.

# gallery-17 margin: auto; # Gallery-17 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 25%; # Gallery-17 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; # Gallery-17 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; / * See gallery_shortcode () in wp-includes / media.php * / motog_vs_xperia_z5_compact_vs_xperia_z3_compact xperia_z5_compact_viewing_angle_1 xperia_z5_compact_viewing_angle_2 xperia_z5_compact_viewing_angle_3

At 50% brightness, we see no major hint of so-called clouding, or uneven illumination, but at 100%, it becomes more apparent. In the picture above the Moto G, Xperia Z5 and Z3 Compact Compact next to each other with 100% brightness. In the top of the display and in the lower right corner visible light leak particularly clear.

Viewing angles correspond to what Xperia Z3 Compact performs even if we think we ana slightly weaker colors at more extreme angles of Z5 Compact. We have not had occasion to remark on the viewing angles among the flagship phones for some time when most manufacturers now use IPS panels of high class, but we are a little surprised that the Z3 Compact seem straw sharper in this regard.

The sensitivity is good and the screen responds that we expect when we are writing, playing games or surfing. Areas that can answer a little bit worse, for example, along the edges work also communicate excellent. We measure, as expected, a refresh rate of 60 Hz; digitizer reads the words on the screen after the touch and pressure 60 times per second.

Sony ship with Google’s latest available Android version Lollipop 5.1 and, superimposed on running the latest version of the manufacturer’s proprietary shell “Xperia UX”. In comparison with previous UX versions, it has not happened so much with the interface, then Sony updated the design for Lollipop / 5.0. We expect instead a major update of the interface associated with the update to the upcoming Android 6.0 / Marshmallow. Those who in recent years have taken an Xperia phone will quickly feel at home.

Sony sends with refreshingly few apps, but we still find some bugs we gladly escaped:
* News from the Social Life (newsreader with Sony advertising)
* What’s New (Apprekommendationer Sony)
* Xperia Lounge (News about Sony products and related events)
* AVG Protection (Antivirus)

We also find Sony’s PlayStation app on your phone and for those wondering what it serves is mainly to either stream games from the Playstation 4 to the phone or to buy the game for the PlayStation devices via PSN.

The settings you can adjust the phone’s white balance from the right-neutral standard position towards the cooler or warmer side.

An interesting feature is that Sony has expanded its Stamina mode to include a appbrandvägg. It makes it possible to deny applications access data unless the device is connected to WiFi; practical for battery-hungry apps such as Facebook Messenger. Huawei was among the corresponding functionality in their handsets and we have benefited greatly from that.

Fingerprint Reader

# gallery-21 margin: auto; # Gallery-21 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; # Gallery-21 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; # Gallery-21 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; / * See gallery_shortcode () in wp-includes / media.php * / xperia_z5_compact_fingerprint_4 xperia_z5_compact_fingerprint_3 xperia_z5_compact_fingerprint_2
xperia_z5_compact_fingerprint_1 xperia_z5_compact_fingerprint_6 xperia_z5_compact_fingerprint_5

To register a fingerprint, we first enter the screen lock / PIN. Then you can save up to five fingerprints by placing each finger repeatedly reader (~ 10-15 times) until the footprint has been registered.

To log into your phone from the dormant mode, it is not enough by simply placing your finger on the fingerprint reader, which OnePlus Two or Huawei Galaxy S, but the user must press the button to enable the drive. After the screen lights up and while we hold the button read the imprint ago and we logged in.

In our case, it happens at about 1/10 times that the fingerprint will not be correctly read when we hold the button. In these cases, we need to let go of the button and then put his finger to the back of a rereading. In the latter case, accuracy is very high and we have only very occasionally had read about the fingerprint with your finger resting on the button. It thus appears that the pressure affects the accuracy slightly. You can register fingerprints with the button pressed, but it was either from or to when we tested.

Sony introduces together with the Z5 series a new camera module with a resolution of 23MP (20MP at 16: 9) and Sony G lens (f / 2.0). The sensor offers besides smartphone world currently highest resolution a hybrid auto focus that combines contrast and phase detection sensing; the number of phase detection points are however unknown because Sony has not revealed either the names or more detailed specifications on the sensor. Sony themselves describe the new camera module with associated optics to the main camera change in Xperia phones since the launch of the Xperia Z1 (2013).

Of the information available on the system partition, we can at least say that the new sensor seems to have the designation IMX300 while in front appears to have the designation IMX241. None of these sensors are currently documented in Sony’s website .

The sensor measures 1 / 2.3 “which with a resolution of 23MP give a pixel size of 1.12μm. Camera module lacks optical image stabilization (OIS), but Sony relying instead on a software-based solution that can be enabled for both still photography (only manual mode) and for video recording.

ISO value goes all the way up to ISO 12800 for shooting in device auto mode according to Sony. In manual mode, ISO value, however locked to 3200, and at higher resolution than the 8MP is ISO value is not adjustable at all. Other settings are however available for shooting up to the maximum resolution of 23MP.

Camera Software

# gallery-22 margin: auto; # Gallery-22 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; # Gallery-22 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; # Gallery-22 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; / * See gallery_shortcode () in wp-includes / media.php * / xperia_z5_compact_camera_3 xperia_z5_compact_camera_4 xperia_z5_compact_camera_5
xperia_z5_compact_camera_6 xperia_z5_compact_camera_1 xperia_z5_compact_camera_2

The main points of the latest version of Sony’s camera software includes, among other things:

Auto Mode supports shooting up to 23MP from previous 8MP From auto mode you can adjust the white balance / exposure compensation without having to go into a submenu A video recording mode for UHD / 4K have to come with recording option in H.264 and H.265

Among the more unusual features include a camera mode to connect multiple devices to each other to record from multiple angles simultaneously. You can also record video in 720p at up to 120 frames per second by Sony TimeShift function, which also offers an edit mode where the pace can be adjusted for the entire clip or just part of it.

When we launch the application the camera is configured to take pictures of 8MP resolution in auto mode. The reason for this is according to Sony to a number of different technologies used to produce good images in a size that is optimal without sacrificing quality appreciably. Below, we examine how large the difference is between the camera’s 8MP mode and 20MP mode.

The application starts usually fast, but not as quickly as in the Galaxy S6 Edge +. From a cold start, it is about twice as fast to get the camera application on the Galaxy S6 Edge + that the Z5 Compact. We also note that the Galaxy S6 Edge + is straw vasare with continuous shooting when the 5 Compact occasionally need a little more time to process images before we can go ahead and take another shot.

we still lack the opportunity to take photos RAW format that both the Samsung Galaxy S6 and LG’s G4 in the current situation offers. In the manual mode is also no possibility to save user-defined profiles, which we have no example from Galaxy S6.

Example images
The pictures below were taken with the phone’s default settings in the auto mode if the title does not say something else. We have during macro photography using Touch Focus to put the focus where we want it. Otherwise, we have allowed the camera software do everything yourself. We urge you right-click and open the images in full size to get a proper idea of the image quality.
